The visual arts are art forms that create works which are primarily visual in nature, such as ceramics, drawing, painting, sculpture, architecture, printmaking, modern visual arts (photography, video, and filmmaking), design and crafts. These definitions should not be taken too strictly as many artistic disciplines (performing arts, conceptual art, textile arts) involve aspects of the visual arts as well as arts of other types. Also included within the visual arts are the applied arts such as industrial design, graphic design, fashion design, interior design and decorative art.

As indicated above, the current usage of the term "visual arts" includes fine art as well as the applied, decorative arts and crafts, but this was not always the case. Before the Arts and Crafts Movement in Britain and elsewhere at the turn of the 20th century, the term artist was often restricted to a person working in the fine arts (such as painting, sculpture, or printmaking) and not the handicraft, craft, or applied art media. The distinction was emphasized by artists of the Arts and Crafts Movement who valued vernacular art forms as much as high forms. Art schools made a distinction between the fine arts and the crafts maintaining that a craftsperson could not be considered a practitioner of art.

The increasing tendency to privilege painting, and to a lesser degree sculpture, above other arts has been a feature of Western art as well as East Asian art. In both regions painting has been seen as relying to the highest degree on the imagination of the artist, and the furthest removed from manual labour - in Chinese painting the most highly-valued styles were those of "scholar-painting", at least in theory practiced by gentleman amateurs. The Western hierarchy of genres reflected similar attitudes.

Are visual arts magnet schools for people who wish to learn or who already posses the talent?
Q. My goal is to become either and Interior/Spatial designer o an Exhibition designer when I grow up. I want to learn about visual arts, but Ive never had any training in visual arts other than elementary school art class. Can I and should I apply for a Visual and Performing Arts magnet school to learn about the subject, but without previous training or special talents?

A. it really depends on the school, but most require some sort of Portfolio. most are set up so that you start from basics, that makes sure that all students know what they are doing. that pretty much takes up the first year. i'd agree with the other person who answered, you just have to show interest, and talent doesn't hurt. I think that going to a school with the programs you want not only will give you the skills and information you need to succeed, but also a diploma that will let you go places you couldn't go without one.

Applying to UC with two semesters of visual arts credit?
Q. I took Computer Graphics 1 (one semester Junior year) and am going to take Drawing 1 next semester Senior Year. Together, the two semester courses add up to 1 credit, but they are nonconsecutive. UC (University of California) says they require applicants to take a single yearlong course in visual arts. Should I be ok?? (btw, I'm from Ohio) Thanks!

A. To satisfy the VPA requirement, you MUST complete a year-long course. What you have right now does not satisfy the requirement.

What common features does Literature and Visual arts have? Examples?
Q. I am supposed to write a paper about what is common in Literature and Visual Arts. Please help!
Asked by WishingUhappiness - Sat Aug 22 13:13:51 2009 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Look for similarities and differences. Pick a painting or a novel and then find the other from the same era to compare and contrast. Look for subject matter, does the artist approve or disapprove of what they are writing about or painting. Are they sombre or happy novels and paintings. You can use sculpture or any other visual art to compare with novels, photography might work too. And your question should read. "What common features do Literature and Visual Arts have?"
