Texas ( / ˈ t ɛ k s ə s /) is the second-largest U.S. state by both area and population, and the largest state in the contiguous United States. The name, meaning "friends" or "allies" in Caddo, was applied by the Spanish to the Caddo themselves and to the region of their settlement in East Texas. Located in the South Central United States, Texas is bordered by Mexico to the south, New Mexico to the west, Oklahoma to the north, Arkansas to the northeast, and Louisiana to the east. Texas has an area of 268,820 square miles (696,200 km), and a growing population of 24.7 million residents.

Houston is the largest city in Texas and the fourth-largest in the United States, while San Antonio is the second largest in the state and seventh largest in the United States. Dallas–Fort Worth and Greater Houston are the fourth and sixth largest United States metropolitan areas, respectively. Other major cities include El Paso and Austin—the state capital. Texas is nicknamed the Lone Star State to signify Texas as an independent republic and as a reminder of the state's struggle for independence from Mexico. The "Lone Star" can be found on the Texas State Flag and on the Texas State Seal today.

Due to its size and geologic features such as the Balcones Fault, Texas contains diverse landscapes that resemble both the American South and Southwest. Although Texas is popularly associated with the Southwestern deserts, less than 10% of the land area is desert. Most of the population centers are located in areas of former prairies, grasslands, forests, and the coastline. Traveling from east to west, one can observe terrain that ranges from coastal swamps and piney woods, to rolling plains and rugged hills, and finally the desert and mountains of the Big Bend.

The term "six flags over Texas" came from the several nations that had ruled over the territory. Spain was the first European country to claim the area of Texas. France held a short-lived colony in Texas. Mexico controlled the territory until 1836 when Texas won its independence, becoming an independent Republic. In 1845 it joined the United States as the 28th state. The state's annexation set off a chain of events that caused the Mexican–American War in 1846. A slave state, Texas declared its secession from the United States in early 1861, joining the Confederate States of America during the American Civil War. After the war and its restoration to the Union, Texas entered a long period of economic stagnation.

One Texas industry that thrived after the Civil War was cattle. Due to its long history as a center of the industry, Texas is associated with the image of the cowboy. The state's economic fortunes changed in the early 1900s, when oil discoveries initiated an economic boom in the state. With strong investments in universities, Texas developed a diversified economy and high tech industry in the mid twentieth century. Today it has more Fortune 500 companies than any other U.S. state. With a growing base of industry, the state leads in many industries, including agriculture, petrochemicals, energy, computers and electronics, aerospace, and biomedical sciences. It leads the nation in export revenue since 2002 and has the second-highest gross state product. Texas' GDP per capita (nominally) is ranked 23rd in the nation, which is below the national average.

Texas education is ranked as low as 50th What should we do to improve the quality of K-12 education in Texas?
Q. Recently, the State Board of Education made national news for altering the K-12 textbook content and curriculum to reflect their ideological views. Texas education is ranked as low as 50th in effectiveness among the states. What should we do to improve the quality of K-12 education in Texas?

A. You guys should reverse the recent ruling of taking Jefferson out of Texan text books. That would be a good start. Also put a bit more effort into separation of church and state, that might get you Texans out of that situation.

Why is the architecture of houses in Texas so similar across the state?
Q. I've seen the exteriors and interiors of several houses throughout West and South Texas, and they all seem to follow the same pattern: One-storey bungalows, with wood-panelling in many rooms, and relatively low ceilings. Why are many built in this fashion - is it a particular architectural/cultural style? Are there many two-storey houses in Texas?

A. You have your big house builders who are across the state and thus use the same building designs over and over. Also it is a matter of "what works". Just like up north they have a certain way of doing things that include basements or crawl spaces depending on the frost line. You also have historical styling in play as well. In the Northeast you have this long but thin style. Well down here the use of brick is huge. One part is the durability and protective values of brick. Also in the pre-A/C times the use of Brick also had to do with keeping the home cool. The brick absorbs the cold of the night and then as the day comes the brick keeps the home cool and then at night it releases the heat and helps keep the house warm.

What will Texas fans do if Oklahoma loses to Missouri and they put USC in the BCS championship?
Q. USC blowing out UCLA could possibly put them ahead of Texas, just saying. UCLA would have won their conference and Texas would not have. I don't think Oklahoma will fall to Missouri but I didn't think Pitt would beat West Virginia last year either.

A. we would protest, and ask the President of the University of Texas to put us in the SEC. edit usc would NOT jump Texas. The BCS point gap between Texas and USC is too great. Pundits are now wondering if the gap is too great between Texas and Florida.

A Texan outside of Texas is a foreigner. When a Texas team takes the field against a foreign state, it is an army with banners.

  • One objection I have heard voiced to works of this kind—dealing with Texas—is the amount of gore spilled across the pages. It can not be otherwise. In order to write a realistic and true history of any part of the Southwest, one must narrate such things, even at the risk of monotony.
  • When MacNab blanched, no more stunned than I, Rusk rose and put his arm about his shoulders: "Never forget, son, when you represent Texas, always go first class."
  • Texas is a state of mind. Texas is an obsession. Above all, Texas is a nation in every sense of the word. And there’s an opening convey of generalities. A Texan outside of Texas is a foreigner.
